Overview
## A clear, honestexplanation.
What the service is, who it's for, when it's needed, and why professional work matters.

What it is

Commercial fire alarm work covers first- and second-fix cabling, containment, panel installation, device fitting and cable termination. Design and commissioning are provided by a third-party fire-alarm specialist, a proper, accountable arrangement rather than an in-house pretence.

Who it's for

Business owners, landlords, letting agents, facilities managers and main contractors responsible for the fire safety of commercial premises, offices, retail, hospitality, industrial units, HMOs and multi-let residential.

When you need it

New premises fit-outs, refurbishments, change of use, insurance-driven upgrades, replacement of failing legacy systems, or extension of an existing system to a new area of the premises.

Why it matters

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, responsible persons in commercial premises have specific duties around fire detection and warning. A properly designed, installed and commissioned system, with the paperwork to prove it, is the only defensible position under audit or after an incident.

The risk
## Why the wrong fire alarm setup costs more than the right one
A poorly-designed or wrongly-installed fire alarm doesn't just fail its purpose; it can invalidate insurance, expose duty-holders personally, and trigger enforcement action.

### What can go wrong

- Enforcement action, Fire and Rescue Services can issue enforcement or prohibition notices.
- Insurance repudiation, a claim can be refused where the installation doesn't match the fire risk assessment.
- Personal liability, the responsible person named under the Fire Safety Order carries real personal responsibility.
- False alarms, badly-placed detectors cost trading hours and desensitise staff to real events.
- Undetected fires, under-covered areas, wrong device categories or missed zones can miss ignition entirely.

### Common mistakes

- Booking a general 'we do fire alarms' contractor with no formal design certification.
- Installing from a generic drawing without a documented fire risk assessment behind it.
- Skipping commissioning by a competent third-party specialist and 'signing off' internally.
- Ignoring category (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, M), treating them as interchangeable when they're not.

In detail
## Commercial fire alarm work in detail
Fire alarm design and commissioning is a specialist discipline in its own right, governed by BS 5839-1 for non-domestic and BS 5839-6 for domestic. We install the system to a competent third-party specialist's design; we don't pretend to design it in-house.

### First-fix cabling
Fire-rated cabling (FP200 or equivalent) run in tidy metal or plastic containment, coordinated with the main contractor and other services.

### Panel installation
Fire alarm control panel installed in the location specified in the design, usually the main entrance, with mains supply and battery backup properly wired.

### Devices, detectors, call points, sounders
Optical, ionisation and heat detectors, manual call points and sounders installed to the third-party specialist's device schedule and zoning plan.

### Categories (L1–L5, P1–P2, M)
Correct category installation, L1 (full protection), L2 (life protection with extra escape route cover), L3 (escape routes), L4 (escape routes only), L5 (bespoke), M (manual only), as specified by the fire risk assessment.

### Extension of existing systems
Adding devices, zones or panels to existing installations, coordinated with the original design authority where possible.

### Third-party design
Design carried out by a specialist fire-alarm design company, accountable, insured and issuing formal design documentation.

### Third-party commissioning
Commissioning by the specialist, issuing the commissioning certificate that insurers and enforcement actually accept.

### Integration with electrical fit-out
Fire alarm cabling integrated cleanly with the wider electrical fit-out on new premises and refurbishments.

Residential

Domestic fire detection sits under BS 5839-6 and is typically simpler, most single-dwelling installations are radio-linked or basic mains-linked detector packages. Our focus is commercial systems under BS 5839-1.

Commercial

Commercial systems under BS 5839-1 require formal design, installation and commissioning by competent parties. The design and commissioning parts are handled by our third-party specialist partner; the installation is ours.
