Overview
## A clear, honestexplanation.
What the service is, who it's for, when it's needed, and why professional work matters.

What it is

EV charger installation covers site survey, load assessment, dedicated circuit installation, RCD/RCBO protection, cable routing, wall or pedestal mounting, commissioning and certification. Domestic 7.4 kW single-phase installs, workplace units and small commercial fleet installations.

Who it's for

Homeowners buying or already running an EV, small businesses adding staff or fleet charging, landlords fitting rental units with EV-ready supply, and commercial premises adding customer or workplace chargers.

When you need it

When you take delivery of an EV, when you add a second vehicle to the household, when you move house, when your business adds electric fleet vehicles, or when your existing tethered granny charger is running hot and slow off a standard 13 A socket.

Why it matters

Domestic sockets aren't designed for continuous 10 A draw. Running an EV off a standard socket damages the socket, wastes hours per charge, and offers no earth-fault, RCD Type A or DC-leakage protection. A dedicated installation solves all of that, properly, once.

The risk
## What goes wrong with unqualified EV installs
EV chargers are one of the most miswired products on the market. A cheap install now costs more than doing it properly six months later, plus the risk to the vehicle itself.

### What can go wrong

- Overheated sockets & wiring, 30 A continuous through a 13 A domestic socket is a real fire risk.
- Damaged consumer units, chargers fitted without load assessment can overload boards and trip mains.
- Missing DC leakage protection, vehicles can inject DC current into AC systems, and Type A RCDs alone don't cover it.
- Voided vehicle & installer warranties, most manufacturers require certified installation by a qualified electrician.
- Cable across the pavement, trip hazard, insurance liability and slow, unreliable charging.

### Common mistakes

- Buying the charger online and asking a general handyman to fit it.
- Skipping the load calculation and assuming the existing supply 'will be fine'.
- Fitting without load management on a house that also has an electric shower and a hob.
- Leaving the granny charger plugged into a standard socket 'temporarily' for months.

In detail
## EV charger installation in detail
EV charging installations aren't 'just fitting a socket'. They involve load assessment, DNO notification thresholds, earthing arrangement checks, RCD/RCBO strategy, DC-leakage protection and, increasingly, smart load management. Below is how we handle it.

### Domestic single-phase 7.4 kW installs
Standard 32 A dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, RCBO Type A + DC leakage protection integrated, IP-rated unit mounted externally to the property.

### Load management & DNO notification
Where existing supply can't take another 32 A load, we specify load-managing chargers that dynamically limit charge rate to protect the main fuse, avoiding costly supply upgrades.

### Earthing & PME considerations
Assessment of the incoming earthing arrangement (TN-S, TN-C-S, TT) and correct protective device strategy, including PEN-fault detection where relevant.

### Cable routing & containment
Cables clipped internally where possible, IP-rated containment used externally, sensible routes agreed in advance with the homeowner.

### Workplace & small commercial installs
Single or multiple units on a commercial supply, with dedicated sub-boards where required. RAMS on request.

### Fleet & multi-unit charging
Multiple 7.4 kW or 22 kW units with proper load management, coordinated switching and dedicated distribution. Feasibility assessed on site.

### Compatible unit brands
We install from a range of manufacturers, chosen based on your vehicle, connectivity requirements, load management needs and budget. Independent advice, not a single-brand pitch.

### Commissioning & handover
Full electrical test, RCD trip time verification, app pairing where applicable, walk-through and paperwork.

Residential

Domestic installs are typically single-phase 7.4 kW, run direct from the household consumer unit with dedicated RCBO. Load management is used where existing supply is already close to capacity.

Commercial

Workplace and fleet installs may involve multiple units, three-phase supplies where available, sub-boards and coordinated load management. RAMS issued on request.
